A 2010 Hair Trends Watch

When it comes to appearances, there is no denying the importance of hair. Feeling good about your hair can easily translate to a strong sense of overall confidence, while a "bad hair day" can put a damper on anyone's good mood. Fortunately, one of the best things about hair is its sheer versatility; you can wear it long or short, straight or curly, up or down, and in virtually any color imaginable. This offers a unique opportunity for experimentation, making hairstyles one of the best ways to partake in new and exciting trends - and make no mistake, there are new hair trends emerging each and every year, if not every season. Here are a few of the biggest hair trends to watch in 2010:

* The shoulder-grazing bob. Also known as a "long bob," this look first caught fire when it was spotted on Katie Holmes. Since then, Gwyneth Paltrow has adopted the style, to dazzling effect. It combines the edginess of a classic bob with the femininity of a longer hairstyle, and the extra length means fewer trims are necessary to maintain the look. Long bobs are also very easy to care for and style; most women choose simply to smooth hair with a flat iron and add shine serum for a glossy finish.
* Sideswept bangs. Bangs are a perennial favorite, thanks to their ability to soften any style and complement nearly every face shape. While blunt-cut bangs were all the rage a few years back, many women now prefer the prettier, more romantic vibe that sideswept bangs impart. These longer bangs, seen on celebs like Nicole Richie, are also easier to grow out, making them an ideal compromise for those who are not entirely sold on the concept of fringe.
* Long, curly "fairytale hair." Call it the Taylor Swift Effect! With her back-grazing blonde curls, Taylor has set off a bona fide hair trend that is particularly popular among teens. Fortunately, it is a youth-appropriate look that is easy to duplicate, and maintenance is as simple as removing split ends and curling (if necessary). Expect to see this style at high school proms all over the country this year!
* Two-toned crops. If you prefer your hair icons a bit more unconventional than Taylor Swift, try pop diva Rihanna on for size! The follicular provocateur is always open to trying new things with her hair, and in 2010 she has been seen out and about with her hair in this punk-inspired style that's closely cropped in the back and sides, with extra length on top. Add chunky blonde highlights to black or dark brown hair to complete the look, and don't be afraid to experiment! Try sweeping hair over to one side for an asymmetrical look, or create a pompadour for a modern/retro vibe.
* Face-framing waves. Finally, we have a classic look that will never go out of style: Simple, sexy, face-framing waves, a la Jennifer Garner. If your hair is shoulder-length or longer, it should be a snap to recreate this look at home. Just curl hair with a large-barreled curling iron - it should be 1.5" in diameter or larger - and then run your fingers through the curls to loosen them into relaxed waves.
